Surgical face masks
Staff are reminded that they MUST wear a Fluid-resistant (Type IIR) surgical mask as a minimum, in and around Trust premises. Personal cloth face masks must not be worn in any area of Trust premises.
Additionally, clinical staff must follow the Trust guidance on PPE, which clearly states the type of mask that should be worn across a range of clinical areas.
As part of the process of ensuring maximum protection of staff and patients, please ensure you follow the guidance below carefully.
Procurement in relation to changes in ward allocation
As the need for extra Covid Cohort wards becomes necessary, items such as medical consumables need to be ordered to ensure a ward can open with the correct stock.
To ensure that the moves are as smooth as possible, please ensure the Procurement Team are engaged as early as possible with the likely requirements of the new ward. From this, they can then order the required items.
When a ward changes from its designated specialty, the Procurement Team have to liaise with external suppliers to adjust stock levels, forecast demand and in some cases justify the increase in usage of certain items.
If a ward change is being considered, please call x5949/4642 to discuss the specific needs. The more notice provided will ensure timely delivery of stock.
FFP3 Masks
As part of the adjustment to national supply of FFP3 masks, the supply of 3M 1863+ masks has now stopped and Trust levels of stock are low. As per previous communications, please ensure that you are immediately tested on alternatives, if you have not been so already. This fit testing can be done through local fit testers or through the central booking system. There are plenty of other makes and models readily available.
Labelling of specimens, tests and examinations
Over the past week there have been an increased number of mislabelled and unlabelled specimens sent to the labs. Please can staff check labels are complete and legible with the correct patient details, and that the labels are affixed securely.
When collecting patients for tests and examinations please check more than just the patients number and use at least 3 identifiers ( i.e. name, dob and hospital numbers) to ensure that you have the correct patient before leaving the ward.
Donations and food deliveries
Staff are reminded that they must not accept deliveries of food or gifts from patients, relatives or external companies into the hospitals, including fast food outlets or local restaurants.
All donations of gifts and food should be directed to the Charity Office.
Any food delivery will be co-ordinated through the team to ensure that the strictest infection prevention measures are followed, AND that food is individually wrapped and isolated for the appropriate amount of time to ensure that the correct safety precautions are in place to reduce the risk of the spread of infection.
Please direct all donations enquiries to: claire.simmo@sthk.nhs.uk
