Home working expenses

Over recent months, many Trust employees have been required to work from home in response to the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. We appreciate that this may have resulted in increased household costs for some employees, for things like heating and electricity.

All employees who have been required to work from home during this period can claim for tax relief on £6 per week with effect from 6 April 2020. The result of such claims will be tax savings of £1.20 per week / £62 per year for basic rate (20%) taxpayers and £2.40 per week / £124 per year for higher rate (40%) taxpayers.

To clarify, this is a tax saving and employees will not receive a payment of £6 per week.

HMRC have confirmed that employees claiming for tax relief on £6 per week will not have to calculate the additional costs from their household bills or keep receipts or other evidence of those costs. Employees who believe that they have incurred increased costs above £6 per week due to working from home, can claim for more, but would need to provide evidence of the costs.

What you need to do:

To claim online:

If you have been required to work from home and wish to claim for the £6 per week tax relief, you will need to complete a P87 form which can be done online here.

To submit an online claim you will need to create a Government Gateway account, if you don’t have one already. Please click here to either sign in to your account or register for a Government Gateway ID.

To claim by post:

If you would prefer to submit a claim by post, you will need to complete the claim form online here and then print it and post it to HMRC.

Please note that the advice from HMRC is for employees to wait until they are back at work as normal (i.e. no longer required to work from home) and then make a retrospective claim for the period they were at home. The employee’s tax code will then be adjusted rather than a refund given.
