Correct use of FFP3 masks

Ensure you have been face fit tested for the mask you are using. Fit testing is available via key trainers in each clinical area.

If a valved, non-shrouded FFP3 respirator is used (these are masks with a valve visible from the outside – see examples below: 3M 1873V and 3M 8833), a fluid resistant (type IIR) surgical face mask must always be worn over the FFP3 mask (even if wearing a visor).

This is to reduce the risk to the wearer of any droplet splashing onto the valved FFP3 mask (as the valve in these are not fluid resistant) and also to reduce the risk to others from droplets in the exhaled breath of the wearer, which is unfiltered in this type of mask.
Note that eye protection must still be worn in conjunction with the masks as per the Trust PPE guidance.
